About Us

Couple_Portrait-1Our team values spiritual and emotional growth in the people around them. It's contained in a goal to inspire, nurture and oversee the zeal and gifts of others. Our team leaders are: Rob and Aliki Flodine who have 15 years up their sleeve in conference speaking and sharing faith stories across Oz & NZ in most denominations. Their passion is seeing Australians of all backgrounds, strengthened and driven by the simple truth that God knows and loves them personally. Both teach God's word, have a heart for the broken and see church not as a building filled on Sunday's, but as a group of people living hand in hand with God Monday to Saturday.

ShannonOur youth leader is Shannon Birch, a 19 year old Tamborine local who loves BMX bikes and sharing Jesus with young people. His passion is drawing this generation towards purpose in God. Over His 8 years of BMX stunt riding, Shannon has broken 8 different bones ... including an accident that left him almost for dead during a JC Epidemic show at Broken Hill. The doctors expected a long and painful recovery with a life that wouldn’t be the same again, but prayer brought healing; Shannon walked off a plane days later. His heart is in the bible, his mind is on Jesus and his interactions are with the kids of Tamborine.

Joining Rob and Aliki for spiritual oversight are Bernie Tane and Stephen Cox. Bernie and Stephen are Tamborine locals with alot of cheek and alot of heart. These two wise men (wasn't there three?) who bring a wealth of love to the life of Liberty- Men with integrity who look to God in making decisions that are sound and yet stretched in faith. The third wise man has taken his family to Fiji to serve broken families at Homes of Hope.

What's a church service like?

Church is quite informal in style. We laugh and enjoy the company of people and the presence of God. There can be moments filled with awe and silence, at other times it's boisterious. We pray at different times for different reasons - during the worship time or spontaneously when a specific need is raised. We share stories of faith at different times also - if someone has had a faith building experience during the week, we love to hear about it. Most people dress casually, whatever is comfortable or "normal" for you is fine.

We value freedom in worship, where each person can reach out to God in a way that benefits and suits them. We are mindful of others and generous towards others. Worship is important to us because it helps us to express our love to God and receive His love in return. The music is presented with a contemporary flavour but varies from classic hymns to Brooke Fraser, Hillsong, Robyn Mark, Tim Hughes or even the odd Delirious tune.

We have communion every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month using grape juice :-) All who love Jesus are welcome to share in this rememberance tradition with us.

Preaching is something we think shouldn't put people to sleep. We love it relevent, dynamic and graciously applied. Sometimes we run with a series or theme... but no matter what aim to give each person a bit of treasure to take into the week. Something to chew on or inspire or challenge or bring restoration. Part of our history is in the scriptural by-line: "Where ever the Spirit of the Lord is, there's Liberty." This just about sums up the question.

What  do we think about tithing/giving to the church?

We believe that giving should reflect our appreciation and commitment to God. It's not primarily about a set amount, but a heart set on supporting church activities/workers that bring value and purpose into people's lives. Giving to God demonstrates our thankfulness for all that we have... and acknowledges that it all we have comes from Him.

What's with the Baptist Label?

We don't make a big thing of being "baptist" which is why our congregation is made up of people from varied church backgrounds. We would call ourselves "Christians"  before "Baptist". At Liberty we quite enjoy and appreciate the church/denominational diversity within those who gather. Our experiences of God and worship are varied, but we find our glue in the good news - that God accepts us when we accept His son Jesus. This is as fundamental as it gets.... and as GOOD as it gets.

Matt and Sue HanlonThe Mountain Community Church (renamed Liberty Tamborine Mountain Baptist Church) started with the passion of Matt and Sue Hanlon in 1998. They came with the support of Kenmore Baptist Church and the Church planting arm of the Baptist Union of Queensland.  In five exciting years Matt and Sue established a vibrant gathering of christians  who met together and served the mountain community.Matt and Sue moved to Yeppoon in 2004 to start another church.

A new phase began with the leadership of Mark and Cheryl Wilson, establishing a heart for overseas missions and teaching the relevance and power of God's word. Eventually Mark and Cheryl moved to Fiji to run "Homes of Hope", a shelter and lifestyle recovery centerfor abused women and their children. A new school has recently commenced there, with two Liberty members joining the HoH team to take on teaching roles. Liberty continues to support this valued work.
